If I was you I'd probably steer clear of the ART preamp. I'm sure its fine, but I think your money could be spent better elsewhere. The Rode actually sounds really nice for what you pay for but I'd probably look at a low end large diaphragm condense…

I'll second Steve on this one, but with a couple possible alternatives. I think you'll need the log and capture window instead of log and transfer window as the HX A1 shoots HDV. And it does make a lot of sense to just edit the thing in HD originall…
My workstation setup right now is my 17" macbook pro. And then sometimes I hook up an external drive or two. :) I don't really have the space to setup a good system, but I definitely miss my old dual display setups at times.
Not sure if this will work in your case but might be worth a shot. He could also try moving everything back. Sounds like he may have moved more than just the project files and media.
