Hi Guys

Just signed up to IV and working my way through the podcasts. But I had a couple of questions about my equipment.

So I had this idea to start a video pod cast. The content will mainly be interviews, but they will be on location in dimly lit places. Sadly my budget is very little. Currently I own a JVC MG275 HDD consumer camcorder and I have access to another of the same model (my Dad bought one at the same time.).

My first question is about sound. As far as I can work out (please correct me if I am wrong) these cameras have no facility to have off camera microphones? If that's the case, is there anything I can do to remedy this? Or am I stuck with crappy audio?

I've not got to the podcasts about lighting yet, but are there budget options? DIY creations?

Love the videos so far, looking forward to seeing the rest (which I'm off to watch now).

Cheers

you mean you dont even have a small microphone jack in the camcorder?

it doesnt surprise me, camcorders have gotten so ridiculously automatic they may as well just be point and shoot, and if you want a camera with features that came standard on every VHS or 8mm camera, you have to buy a top of the line pro camera

its a sad state of affairs

but that said, if u do have a jack, just get an adapter to fit your mic cord and get a cheap mic stand.

you could also buy a wide-angle lens so u can move your camera closer to the subject

I ALWAYS use an external Audio recorder. so I can move camera locations and get different angles and fill in the moving positions with fill-in cut away shots of related material

Sony has some inexpensive Audi recorders, at the lowest end are the standard cassette recorders with mic jacks which can easily be converted to digital format, from 19$ to 45$ check them out here: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?...

next best are the digital voice recorders, they range from 39$ to 300$ some record MP3 only, they should all have a mic jack, and will suit most internet video podcasting needs, most of the price range could be the micr, dont worry about the built in mic, get your own mic, the better ones have CD-quality recording modes for a little more money, check them out here: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?...

then there is the one I use, the PCM D50, here: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?...

its a very big, very full-featured machine

but i could get away with doing my recording from a 20-50$ recorder if i needed to

spend as little as you can on the recorder, and as much as you can on the Mic

of course, the other logical option is just to use a laptop with a program like Adobe Audition or Sound Forge or any number of Freeware applications online, you could consider getting an external audio adapter from creative for higher bitrates

these mics are excelltent, rangiing from 15$ to 110$ here: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?...

sony really makes great mics
